How to setup a new Microsoft 365 Business account
Introduction
This is our second article in a complete series on migrating your emails to Microsoft 365 Exchange Online. In Step 1 we showed you how to chose the right Microsoft 365 Business plan for your needs.
In this step we show you how to puchase the Microsoft 365 Business plan. We assume you will be buying one of the followingL
Microsoft 365 Business Basic -
Microsoft 365 Business Standard
Once you have chosedn click Buy now.
1. Choose how many licenses you need, length of subscription and how often you want to be billed.
2. Click Next.
4. Enter your email address and click Next.
You may already have a business Microsoft account but if not then you will create a new one. You might already have a personal Microsoft 365 account but this is separate from the business account we are now setting up.
Click Setup account
5. Complete the form with required information.
6. Click Next.
6. Select Text me and enter your mobile number.
7. Click Send verification code.
8. Enter your verification code and click Verify.
9. Enter a username. Your first name is usually best.
10. For domain name you can enter your company name or your domain name. You will see it will be appended with .onmicrosoft.com. This is a temporary holding domain. Later on we will be linking the domain name you own to this Microsoft account. But for the time being everyone has to have a .onmicrosoft.com account. Therefore it doesn't really matter what you put in as it will soon be irrelevant.
11. Enter a strong password and then click Next.
12. Choose how many licenses you need. You need one license for each email account you want to setup.
13. Click Add payment method.
14. Enter your credit card details and all the other required fields.
15. Click Save.
14. Once payment has been completed you will taken to the Admin homepage for your Microsoft 365 account.
We now a Microsoft 365 Business account. Next steps are to link our domain to this account. Once this is done you can start the migration of emails from your IMAP into the new Microsoft 365 Exchange Online accounts.
The next steps are dependant on who is hosting your domain. For IONOS or 123-Reg click the relevant button below. For all other hosting accounts you will probably find the steps for cPanel the most relevant as the vast majority of webhosting companies use cPanel.
